Expert Advice: How to Organize a Small Closet

How To Organize a small closet, Tips & Advice

Organizing and keeping your closet tidy is never an easy task, especially when there are spatial restrictions. With some smart organization and careful planning even the smallest closet can become perfection. Here are some tips from us at Cargo Cabbie, Toronto’s top moving company!

Do you notice the same articles of clothing never being touched? It’s time to say goodbye to that pair of leather pants you’ve only worn once. They might have looked good when you saw them on Ross from Friends a few years ago, but it’s time for them to retire. Donate your used clothes if those hangers aren’t flipped after a couple of months. You’ll breath easier with a bit of more space to work with.

Cargo Cabbie closet organizing tips2. Think vertically
Don’t forget to look up – no, really. Make sure you’re optimizing the most of your space by adding shelves, storage units, or even hooks on the back of your closet door. Are you 5”0? Investing in a folding step-stool is a great idea – that way you can pack everything away nicely, and access it when you need it. Out of sight, out of mind.

Who knew how much space you could save! Hang hangers off of, well, hangers. Optimize your space from top to bottom – and it even creates a staggered look, perfect for getting a peak at all of your clothing at once.

The possibilities are endless! Drape your scarves, or hang some S hooks and you can hang all of your belts, ties, or anything that easily gets lost in your closet. You can even buy a shower curtain rod, and use the curtain clips to hang gloves, hats, or other articles of clothing.

5. Light is your best friend
Most closets have the bare minimum for lighting, if any. You can buy some simple (and cheap!) motion sensor lights that have a sticky adhesive on the back. Lighting your closet properly will open up your space in a way you never imagined. Invest in a couple of rechargeable AA batteries and you’re in business! Now that you can see to the back of your closet, consider fixing a small shelving to the back. You can keep knick-knacks, jewelery, or other small items– now that you can see them! For more information on lighting you can always contact the awesome team at Hot-wire electric. They have an average customer rating of 9.9/10 on Homestars, which is fantastic! This great company can give you advice, tips and help you choose the right lighting for your closets at home.

Lastly, When in doubt we always recommend going to the professionals. For your closet organizing and building needs we highly recommend Tailored Living. They are included alongside us as Best of Homestars 2016 winners, and Best of Houzz winners in 2016 so you know they are the best in their field! It’s so important to use sites like Homestars and Houzz to read reviews and see past experiences of clients. Tailored Living have some of the best we have seen!

If all the re-organizing has you feeling inspired to move some furniture around, feel free to give us a call or email. In-home moves and small moves are some of our specialties! We hope these tips will help you start the new year freshly organized.
